Diversity is a key driver of building a great workplace culture. It all starts with the foundational belief that building something great, making good decisions requires bringing in different perspectives. It’s not unlike this great country of ours. One of the things that makes us truly great is we are a melting pot. And it’s the same thing for a company, it’s the same thing for a foreign organization. We’ve got to value different perspectives and what makes each person unique.
Let’s say there’s a big decision we’ve got to make. If one person or a small team of people with the same cultural background, the same ages, the same gender are making that decision it’s almost impossible to get different perspectives, different angles. Then, the second step is equally important. We’ve got to create an environment where people can bring their true selves to work.
“There’s kind of an outdated notion that there’s sort of my true self and then there’s my work self. I drive to work every day and I leave my true self in the car and my work self comes to work every day. And then, at the end of the day, I go back and there’s my true self – now I’m back to who I really am,” pinpoints Drew Clancy, CEO of PCI.
Here at PCI what we’re trying to do is create an environment where all of our associates can bring to work every day all of who they truly are. All their experience, all their skills, all their passion, all their dedication are key to tapping into all that they’ve got inside them. The more people feel acknowledged and respected for who they are, the better they perform.
Want to build a great work culture based on diversity? Step one, value different perspectives and step two, create an environment where we can bring those perspectives to work every day.
